At the Olympic Games in Beijing, Fabian Cancellara won a gold medal in the time trial and surprised everyone with a bronze medal in the road race. According to the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI), the Olympic silver medal from the road race is to be withdrawn from Davide Rebellin.

Therefore Fabian Cancellara from Bern will move up from third to second place behind winner Samuel Sanchez (Sp).

The bronze medal will then go to Russian Alexander Kolobnew.

CONI is apparently following the instructions of the IOC with this measure.

Pro rider Davide Rebellin is one of a group of athletes that tested positive for the EPO preparation Cera during the IOC checks after Beijing doping tests.
