Fabian Cancellara was among the leaders when 30 or more riders broke away shortly after the start of the 203 km race at Ghent-Wevelgem. However, a puncture after a third of the distance slowed the Olympic champion.

Later on Cancellara had to change his bike two more times because of mechanical faults.

He finally finished the race in 85th place.

One small consolation: 3rd place went to 22-year-old Australian Matthew Goss, roommate of Fabian Cancellara.

The race was won by Edvald Boasson Hagen.
